Lou Sullivan (1951–1991) was a pioneering openly gay trans man whose activism reshaped medical, social, and community understandings of transgender identity in the late twentieth century. This collection includes selected correspondence from 1973–1991 documenting Sullivan’s medical transition, his advocacy for FTM recognition within gender clinics, and his work in trans community publishing.
The letters include exchanges with medical professionals, colleagues, and friends—among them Rupert Raj, Ben Power, Alyn Hess, Dr. Michael Brownstein, and Dr. Paul Walker. Together, they offer insight into the development of FTM networks, evolving medical debates, and Sullivan’s experience navigating AIDS while remaining an active voice in trans organizing.
